Mawlid – ‘You will certainly follow the ways of those who came before you…’

Assalaamu Alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu,

So mawlid time again…

We all know the arguments, backwards and forwards on youtube, social media, with work colleagues and friends in the masaajid, we do it every year and others have refuted mawlid much better than myself so I am just going to leave the mawlid tree out there again just to show how ridiculous this whole celebration can get.

The rest you can get from those who are more knowledgeable than myself out there and why we should not celebrate this custom, which was introduced into Islam 300 years after our Nabi (Sallallahu alayhi wa salam) passed into the life of the grave.

THE HISTORY OF SUFISM – BY DR. MUHAMMAD MUSA AL-SHAREEF

In any aspect of our deen it is important to be balanced, to not fall into extremes of partisanship either for or against but  to look at the evidence and tease out the truth of the matter with balance and fairness.

In this important talk, Dr Muhammad Musa Al-Shareef discusses the origins of the Sufis and Sufism, how it contains some goodness as well as bad and how they’ve gone further and further astray as time has gone on.

“I had to stress this point at the beginning as some think the sufis are all deluded, ignorant and in the wrong. On the other hand, there are some people who regard Sufis as authorities in relgion and examples of true Muslims. In fact, both are extreme views. The moderate view is that Sufis are a sect of Muslims; we can adopt their sound views and give up their false ones.”

FOLLOWING THE QURAN AND SUNNAH BUT NOT THE SAHABAH

Shaykh-ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allāh have mercy upon him, said:

“Whoever thinks that he can simply take from the Book (the Qur’ān) and the Sunnah without following the Sahābah (the companions of the Prophet ﷺ, may Allāh be pleased with them), and pursues a path other than theirs, is from the people of innovations.”
