In any aspect of our deen it is important to be balanced, to not fall into extremes of partisanship either for or against but  to look at the evidence and tease out the truth of the matter with balance and fairness.

In this important talk, Dr Muhammad Musa Al-Shareef discusses the origins of the Sufis and Sufism, how it contains some goodness as well as bad and how they’ve gone further and further astray as time has gone on.

“I had to stress this point at the beginning as some think the sufis are all deluded, ignorant and in the wrong. On the other hand, there are some people who regard Sufis as authorities in relgion and examples of true Muslims. In fact, both are extreme views. The moderate view is that Sufis are a sect of Muslims; we can adopt their sound views and give up their false ones.”
Dr Muhammad Musa Al-Shareef – The History of Sufism

Three reasons why our iman is probably still low even though we pray and worship.

Ahmad bin Harb.(رحمه الله) said: “I worshiped Allaah for fifty years, I wasn’t able to find the sweetness of worship until I forsake three things:

1. I forsake seeking the acceptance of people, so I was able to speak the truth.

2. I forsake the companionship of the sinner, so I was able to accompany the righteous.

3. I forsake the sweetness of the life of this world, so I was able to find the sweetness of the afterlife.”

By brother Ustad Musa Millington Hafidahullah

Yasir Qadhi, please bat in your crease
الحمد لله رب العالمين و العاقبة للمتقين و لا عدوان الا على الظالمين و اصلى و اسلم على عبده و رسوله محمد و على اله و صحبه و سلم

Upon seeing the issues that Yasir Qadhi has regarding the Qur’an initially I thought that I had woken up from an unreal nightmare. But when I saw the posts one by one regarding this individual and verified it I saw it was indeed reality that hit me straight in my face.

After Yasir’s speech about Salafiyah, his blatant lies on Salafiyah and its scholars (Sh. Ibn ‘Uthaimeen & Sh. Al Albani and others) and his statements regarding ‘Umar Ibn Khattab I was still in utter shock regarding his statements about the Qur’an which are tantamount to clear Zandaqah (heresy). As a brother who studied in Madeenah while Yasir was there I would have never imagined that 15 years later he would have such an atrocious understanding regarding the preservation of the Qur’an.

Now, to further clarify as to why Yasir’s speech is clear heresy we must look at what Ahlus Sunnah say, what the deviants have said and what Yasir says, then from that standpoint one would find that Yasir’s speech is completely reprehensible.

As for the belief of Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama’ah; we believe that the Qur’an is the words of Allah sent by him and is not created. From him it originates and to him it returns and that it is Allah’s true speech in reality and it is not the speech of anyone else. If it is read, written or memorized it is still the speech of Allah in terms of its letters, its words and its meanings.(Summary of Ibn Taymeeyah’s speech in Waasiteeyah)

The Mu’tazilah, who Imam Ahmad and many of the Imams of that time have classified as disbelievers, believe that the Qur’an is the speech of Allah but created. Their principle regarding this is that the attributes of Allah are created and this led them to clear heresy since if one says that Allah’s descriptions are created he is in fact saying that Allah himself is created which is disbelief.

The Asharis (the Kulabeeyah) believe that the Qur’an is an expression of Allah’s eternal speech as they believe that Allah speaks without letters and voice and doesn’t speak whenever he wants at whatever time he wants hence nullifying Allah’s will and ability from his actions and speech. This is also clear falsehood since Allah spoke to Musa saying: “Verily I am Allah there is nothing worthy of worship but me…”, and it is impossible that the fire or an Angel said this to Musa (غليه السلام)

Now, the rhetoric of these groups DOES NOT contest the issue of the word by word preservation of the Qur’an. Rather, their intention through this rhetoric was to distance Allah from having the qualities of the creation. And although these intentions were good they still ended up in misguidance since they deviated from the Prophetic methodology.

Now, Yasir Qadhi said:

“In conclusion; the Qur’an cannot be then a letter for letter, tashkeel for tashkeel narrative that the later scholars verbalize and the Muslim Ummah is taught. Therefore the preservation must be interpreted in another manner.”

He also said:

“Problem: How can we then understand the Qur’an as being Kalaam Allah (the speech of Allah) when clearly there are human aspects to it.”

He also said that the issue of the Qur’an being the speech of Allah has to be rethought.

Now, look at that speech and compare it to the Mu’tazilah and the ‘Asharis (who Yasir does not care about being classified with) and we would see that the deviants from the Mu’tazilah and the ‘Asharis still believe in the divine nature Qur’an (i.e being the speech of Allah). As for Yasir, he questions the very preservation of the Qur’an and its divinity.

Yasir Qadhi’s methodology is reminiscent of that of Jahm Ibn Safwan’s. Instead of acceptance and submission he resorted to dispute, rhetoric and argumentation. Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, the Imam who was famous for his knowledge and his fortitude, said in his book; “Refutation of the Heretics” about Jahm:

“And from that which that has reached us is that Jahm, the enemy of Allah, was from those of Khurasan, from Tirmidh, and he was a person of argumentation and rhetoric” (Refutation of the Heretics: 7)

Now although there are many verses in the Qur’an which refute Yasir’s speech and which clearly state that it is the speech of Allah sent to Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه و سلم) the following two verses are those which I think would render Yasir’s arguments null and void.

Allah has said about the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه و سلم):

“And he does not speak from his desires. It is only a revelation unto him.” Surah Najm {53:3-4}

Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal said regarding this verse:

“He (Allah) says that verily Muhammad didn’t speak of this Qur’an from himself. He therefore said “It is”- meaning the Qur’an- “only a revelation unto him.” Therefore Allah has negated that the Qur’an be other than revelation” (Refutation of the Heretics: 11)

Likewise Allah has said in Surah Haaqah (69 :43-47)

” This is the Revelation sent down from the Lord of the Worlds. And if he (Muhammad) had forged a false saying concerning us. We surely would have seized him with the right hand. And we certainly would have cut off his life artery. And none of you could have witheld us from (punishing him).”

Therefore, if it is a revelation sent by Allah and didn’t come from Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه و سلم) and even he; the greatest man to ever walk on this earth, could not invent any statement regarding Allah’s revelation then what evidence of human interference (human element as he calls it) is Yasir speaking about exactly?

In conclusion, my advice to Yasir is to take some time and read the Qur’an and avoid fruitless debate and rhetoric which would put one into clear disbelief. Additionally, after he has fed the Western Masses the perception that the real scholars are unable to deal with contemporary matters I think that since he has doubts about the Qur’an (although he claims to be a theologian) it is about time that he bat in his crease, humble himself and sit under the scholars of Islam rather than Tony Blair.

RE the sister getting told to remove her hijab by the armed Nice Police in France, no I won’t be sharing the image and shame on those who have done so already.

Where is your protective jealously for our sister? What if it was your wife, daughter, mother or sister, would you be happy with her image being shared and looked at by all these men on social media?

paris policeYes the oppression in this case is terrible, part of the wider oppression felt by the Muslims in France, especially our sisters who are being literally forced by gun-toting cops to uncover themselves and take clothing off in public, but that in no way justifies you sharing such images.

Given the background of the image with semi-naked men and women do you even think it’s appropriate or even permissible to share such an image anyway even if the sisters face is not clear / blocked out?

It’s like all the people sharing images of models in Burkinis to show a visual image of the French ban on this item of clothing and claiming you are sharing such images to defend modesty… Stupid doesn’t even begin to cover such people.

Here is a Fatwah from Sheikh Muhammad Saalih al-Munajjid at Islam Q&A on women sharing their image on social media, I hope the intelligent among you would realize if this applies to sisters sharing images of themselves, it applies doubly to men sharing these pictures of sisters in hijab or even worst actual indecent images.

We need to remember such dhulm is a test, a trial and yes sometimes a punishment from Allaah and that to end such oppression doesn’t just mean denouncing it, but that as Muslims we need to wake up and return to our deen and that Allaah informs us in the Quran:

For each one are successive [angels] before and behind him who protect him by the decree of Allah . Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves. And when Allah intends for a people ill, there is no repelling it. And there is not for them besides Him any patron.

Ibn Qayyim Al Jawziyyah
(Translated by Hisham Assing)

The Fitnah of “Shubuhaat”

Fitnah is of two types: the fitnah of “shubuhaat”, {doubts and misunderstandings}, this one being the greater fitnah of the two, and the fitnah of “shahawaat” {desires}. It is quite possible that {these two fitnah} can be present in the abd {servant} at the same time, or one of them may be within him to the exclusion of the other.

Regarding the fitnah of shubuhaat {doubts and misunderstandings}, this is due to having a weak vision and a lack of knowledge, not to mention if this is accompanied by corrupt intentions and the goal of fulfillment of ones’ desires, and herein lies the greatest of all fitnah, this is indeed the worst of afflictions.

Say what you like about the deviation of evil motives, the dominant factor in such a person is his hawa {desires}, and not huda {guidance}, in addition to his weak vision and the lack of knowledge with which the messenger {sallahu alayhi wasalam} . Hence, he is like those whom Allah describes:

“They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord!” {An Najm:23}

And indeed Allah {subhaanhu wa ta’la} has informed us that the following of desires misguides one from Allahs’ path, He says:

“O Dâwûd (David)! Verily! We have placed you as a successor on earth, so judge you between men in truth (and justice) and follow not your desire for it will mislead you from the Path of Allâh. Verily! Those who wander astray from the Path of Allâh (shall) have a severe torment, because they forgot the Day of Reckoning”. {Sad: 26}

This is the kind of fitnah which leads to kufr and nifaaq {hypocrisy}, which is the fitnah of the hypocrites and ahl’il bidah {the people of innovation}, according to the degree of their bidah. Thus, the majority of them innovate because of the fitnah of shubuhaat {doubts and misunderstandings}, whereby they confuse the truth with falsehood and guidance with misguidance.

There is no salvation from this kind of fitnah except by exclusively following the messenger {sallahu alayhi wasalam} by appointing him as the judge in the fine {detailed} matters in the deen and its simpler ones, the public aspects of his life and the private one, his beliefs and his actions, his reality and his legislation, thus he takes from him {the messenger sallahu alayhi wasalam} the reality of emaan and the legislation of islaam.

He also accepts from him {alayhi as salam} what all he {alayhi as salam} has confirmed from Allah’s’ names, attributes and actions, and he does not negate them, in the same manner he accepts from him {alayhi as salam} the obligation of salah, its’ time and the number {per day}, the percentage of ones’ wealth on which zakat is due and those who deserve it, the obligation of wudu and ghusl {from sexual impurity}, the obligation of fasting in the month of ramadan, etc. Therefore, he does not see him {alayhi as salaam} only as a messenger in some aspects of the deen to the exclusion of others, but to the contrary he is the messenger for everything this ummah is in need of – be it knowledge or actions. So, he does not accept nor take {anything} except if it is from him {alayhi as salaam}, for the all guidance surrounds around his statement and actions. And everything which is outside of his guidance is dalaal {a deviation}. Thus, if this {principle} is implanted in the heart of the servant and he turns away from everything except this {the messengers’ prophetic guidance}, whereby whenever he judges anything he examines it in the light of that which the messenger came with, if it agrees with what he {alayhi as salaam} came with then he accepts it. And this is not because that particular person said what he said, but rather {he accepts it} because it agrees with the message {the sunnah}, and if it contradicts the sunnah he rejects it, regardless of whoever it came from. And this is what will save a person from the shubuhaat {doubts and misunderstandings}, and if he misses this {principle} then fitnah will afflict him in accordance to the degree he neglected this {principle}.

This fitnah is sometimes as a result of incorrect understanding, wrong information, the truth being confirmed and is present, but one was unaware of it so he was not able to get the most out of it, or sometimes it can simply be that a person has evil intentions and is just following his desires, thus he becomes from amongst those who are blinded in their vision and harbours evil in intentions.

The Fitnah of Shahawaat {desires}

Allah has indeed combined in the following ayat the description of those whom the two types of fitnah have befallen them:

“Like those before you, they were mightier than you in power, and more abundant in wealth and children. They had enjoyed their portion awhile, so enjoy your portion awhile as those before you enjoyed their portion awhile; and you indulged in play and pastime (and in telling lies against Allâh and His Messenger Muhammad ) as they indulged in play and pastime. Such are they whose deeds are in vain in this world and in the Hereafter. Such are they who are the losers”. {At Tawbah: 69}.

So Allah is pointing out to us here what happens from the corruption of the hearts and the deen because of taking pleasures in their portion {of this world} and indulging in {speaking about} falsehood, {and this is so} because curropting ones’ deen occurs either by falsehood and engaging in it, or by doing deeds which contradict correct action.

As for the first one; it is bidah and what results from it. And the second one is sinful actions. The first one {bidah} is consequence of shubuhaat, and the second {sinful actions} is an outcome of shahwaat. This is why the salaf used to say be aware of two kinds of people: a person of desires {innovator} whose desires has misguided him, and a person of this world (dunya people} whom this world has blinded him. They also used to say {the salaf}: be careful of the fitnah of evil scholar and the ignorant worshipper, for indeed their fitnah afflicts everyone who is misguided. The source of {all} fitnah is a consequence of giving precedence to opinions over what Allah has legislated, and preference of desires over intelligence. Thus, the basis of the first fitnah is shubuhaat and the basis of the second one is shahawaat.

The Cure for These Two Fitnah

As for the fitnah of shubuhaat this can be prevented and cured by possessing “Al Yaqeen” certainty, and fitnah of shahawaat can be fended off and remedied by “As sabr” patience. This is why Allah made leadership of this deen by possessing these two qualities, hence He says:

“And We made from among them leaders, giving guidance under Our Command, when they were patient and used to believe with certainty in Our Ayât”. {As Sajdaah: 24}, thus this indicates that by having patience and certainty one achieves leadership in this religion. Allah has also interlined these two characteristics in surah Al Asr wherein He says: “Except those who believe and do righteous good deeds, and recommend the truth to each other and recommend one another to patience.” {Al Asr: 3}.

Therefore, advising each other in truth repels “shubuhaat” and recommending patience to each other restrains one from his desires. So by having patience and a sound intellect {this} restrains one from the fitnah of “shahawaat”, and by possessing a clear vision and certainty {this} repels the fitnah of “shubuhaat”, wallahulmusta’an.

Warning: The video linked in this post has a sister who has not covered herself fully, so would request brothers who wish to listen to the video to avert their gaze and fear Allaah. Easiest way is to hit play then open another tab on your browser so you can listen without the need to watch the video.

We learn as we study some of the most basic aspects of aqeedah (Islamic belief) that the statement ‘La ilaha ‘illa Allaah’  has conditions for it’s acceptability before Allaah and that one of the conditions is ‘Al-Yaqeen,’ meaning certainty.

But here Yasir Qadhi himself admits to still having doubts and that these doubts developed whilst studying Islamic studies with the Kuffar at Yale University.

“Wallahi I’ll be honest with you, the shubahaat I was exposed to at Yale, some of those I still don’t have answers to.”
Yasir Qadhi

For some people the position of Yasir Qadhi has already become clear, for some blind following fan-club members nothing, not the released emails confirming his doubts, nor this video with a direct confession to those doubts will be enough but I hope that for most of you who are in worried about whether it is permissible or good to take ilm from Yasir Qadhi that  this video will be sufficient for you.

May Allaah guide Yasir Qadhi and us all to the Haqq and keep us firm upon it with Yaqeen, bring us back the Yasir Qadhi of old, pre-Yale days we loved so much and help this ummah as we strive and struggle to establish our deen, ameen.

Assalaamu Alaykum,

Yes… I am actually going to share Imran ibn Mansur’s latest video even though I know it is going to burn some of you who are seeing this placed online and usually respond with abuse and hatred when they see their favourite Sheikh exposed.

Though I remain not at all convinced regarding Sh. Haitham (though this video does raise question marks which need investigating), the information put out here regarding the secret beliefs and agenda of Yasir Qadhi and also perhaps others needs to be placed in the public domain.

I’d advise you all to actually watch the video from start to finish, then make up your own minds and not listen to those who are responding to this video with personal attacks and ridicule on social media.

When someone stoops to that level you can tell they have nothing useful to say in response, no meaningful arguments or counter arguments, so now they’re attacking Imran instead, attacking his character, his manner of speaking, his mannerisms, even going as far to say he is ill.

Shame on you if you are taking parts in such attacks on Imran, may Allaah swt protect Imran, reward him for his good deeds, correct his mistakes and allow him to continue with his Dawah in the UK, ameen.

Edit. (19.08.2016) for the record, watching the video again I do agree with those who say he has been too harsh or even unfair about Sh. Haitham, but at the same time watching it again has only reinforced my opinion regarding YQ and his misguidance.

Assalaamu Alaykum,

This is an extremely well balanced advise and gentle refutation of the misguidance given in some recent talks of the popular youtube vlogger and nasheed singer ‘I am Khaled’ regarding music, whether  it is halal or haram, whether the deen is clear cut about this matter of music or whether the deen is clear cut in general.

May Allaah reward Ustadh Abu Taymiyyah for his beautiful summing up many of the points put by other brothers in their articles and videos in response to many of the western nasheed singers / musicians, ameen.

Brothers who though they seem in some cases to be sincere in their love of the deen, are using musical instruments or sound effects which are almost identical to musical instruments and at the same time justifying their deeds according to the aql (reason / intellect) rather than referring to the clear texts on these matters.

Fans of I am Khaled or other nasheed artists should not take this as a personal attack, it is not, I know Ustadh Abu Taymiyyah and Khaled both, they are both beautiful brothers in their own way and the Ustadh is just advising Khaled to stick to clear evidences, correct himself in his actions and stay away from talking about matters on which he has no authority to speak which is good advise for many of the youtube / social media public figures who have come to prominence in the past few years.

Assalaamu Alaykum,
