WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

For my Australian anti-Muslim follower, who I’ve picked up somehow, and who feels it’s his duty to drops some pretty nasty comments, this post and the pic is just for you, I am really that considerate and kind to my blog followers and never miss out on a chance to educate a person such as yourself.

where are you from

Every person of a different colour or a slightly funny accent knows this conversation well, and not just in Australia but the UK and other countries to.

There is an unspoken rule in the mind of the ignorant, that no matter how long you live in a country, you always remain a foreigner as long as you look or sound different. You might live here, but it’s not your land like it is their land.

There are Yemeni families living Sheffield, Cardiff and other places who moved here decades before my own folks got off the boat from Ireland in the 50’s and yet my white privilege means I was never questioned regarding my status as I looked the same as most other people until I become Muslim.

One of the weird side effects of reverting to Islam was everyone else becoming incredibly confused about my identity. Hey I was often confused enough about my identity, was I a Muslim who just happened to live in Britain or a proud British Muslim? (Those who read my blog regularly know which side of the fence I came down on in that debate)

But all of a sudden other white people would ask me, “where are you from?” expecting me to say Bosnia, Albania, or Chechnya or Pluto or wherever they felt white ish looking Muslims must come from, for so many people it just didn’t compute in their mind that a white person of British decent would choose to follow Islam.

Ignorant Bigot: “So where are you from?”
Me: “England”
Ignorant Bigot: “Yes, but where are your family from?”
Me: “Ireland” (with some English and Scots as well)
Ignorant Bigot: “Yes but before they went to Ireland, where did they come from?”
Me: … Walks away giving up

As Muslims living in the Britain, this land is as much ours as it is anyone else’s, the whole of Britain is a melting pot of different races and cultures and we have as much right to call for our way of life, and advocate for that as anyone else.
